KJV Luke 2

1 And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be taxed.
2 (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.)
3 And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city.
4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:)
5 To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.

NKJV Luke 2

1 And it came to pass in those days that a decree went out from
Caesar Augustus that all the World should be registered.
2 This census first took place while Quirinius was governing Syria.
3 So all went to be registered everyone to his own city.
4 Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David,
5 to be registered with Mary, his betrothed wife, who was with child.

NIV Luke 2

1 In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world.
2 This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.
3 And everyone went to his own town to register.
4 So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David.
5 He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child.

Notice the differences between these three versions, which are the three of the popular ones in use today. In the coming weeks I will try to help you and me to understand these verses better by attempting to translate them from a Greek text with the little knowledge that I have of the Greek language. I am just a beginner.
